ACC subsidise (partly pay) counselling for people who have experienced sexual abuse. In order to qualify for ACC you need to see a counsellor/therapist who is ACC approved (on the books at ACC). They will fill in the forms for you and tell you about the process. If you wanted to find out more, you could ring ACC, see above, or call one of the counselling agencies listed. ACC also holds a list of all of the counsellors/therapists all over New Zealand; you could call them for a list in your area. They have a booklet they could send you (counselling agencies have them too) on how to make a claim, choosing a counsellor, and what to do if you have any concerns.

The programme caters for anyone who admits they have sexually abused a child, and is willing to work on changing their future behaviour. The programme lasts from 1 to 2 years, and involves weekly group therapy as well as individual and family therapy. It can also include outdoor (wilderness programme) therapy. Te Pua Pohutukawa is a service dedicated to young people who have been sexually abused, assaulted. The staff to help you include a doctor, nurse and a social worker. These people make sure that you are safe from any physical problems and have no injury or infections. They do a series of test to check everything out. If at any stage you do not want to carry on they will stop. Everything is done at your speed, and is explained at every step. You can have a support person (mum, dad, friends, aunty and/or friend's mum etc.) with you if that helps you feel more comfortable/safer.

Tu Wahine

Tu Wahine is a Maori service for children, young people, women and their families who have experienced and are dealing with the effects of sexual abuse/assault.

WIRC provides free counselling, support, information and advocacy for women survivors of rape and sexual abuse and their families and friends. We also do alternative education programmes for secondary schools on rape and sexual abuse, myths, stereotypes, supporting a friend, assertiveness, racism and more. We have both young and older workers so people can choose who they feel most comfortable with. We are a politically active organisation with no direct links with the police. We believe in the right of the survivor to define her own process of healing, which basically means no one will be telling you what to do!

Wellington Sexual Abuse HELP Foundation provide a 24 hour phone service, support and information, a callout service for police interview, forensic and non-forensic medical, ACC counselling (including a Maori counsellor) and psychotherapy and education. They are also the contact point for the ACC sexual abuse group and work with women, men and children and cover the Wellington and Porirua areas.
